  • There is no obligation to provide a warranty when selling a vehicle privately, but you should inform the buyer of any serious defects with the vehicle that you are aware of.
  • If your car is subject to a finance agreement, you must first inform the company who provided the finance of your intention to sell.
  • Ensure that anyone test driving your vehicle is covered by either yours or their insurance and never allow anyone to test drive your vehicle unaccompanied.
  • Don't misrepresent the vehicle or make any false claims in your description.
  • Complete the Transfer of Ownership papers and send them to the Department of Planning and Infrastructure.
  • Transferring ownership.

Trade In

  • When trading in a vehicle, the dealer will complete all the necessary paperwork.
  • You will be responsible for handing over the current licence papers to the dealer.
  • As a courtesy you should ensure that any spare keys, vehicle log books and service history documents are left with the vehicle.
  • You will be required to sign a form declaring any outstanding debt owing on the vehicle.

Through a Licensed Dealer

  • When selling or leaving a vehicle on consignment with a dealer, your obligations are the same as those when trading in.
  • The dealer will complete all the necessary paperwork.
  • You will be responsible for handing over the current licence papers to the dealer.
  • As a courtesy, you should ensure that any spare keys; vehicle log books and service history documents are left with the vehicle.
  • You will be required to sign a form declaring any outstanding debt owing on the vehicle.

At AuctionCar Side View

  • Selling through an auctioneer is the same as selling through a licensed dealer.
  • The auctioneer will complete all the necessary paperwork.
  • You will be responsible for handing over the current licence papers to the auctioneer.
  • As a courtesy, you should ensure that any spare keys; vehicle log books and service history documents are left with the vehicle.
